Icopal Anderson 3B Glass Base Layer (20m Roll) are manufactured from strong bonded fibreglass and are coated with oxidised bitumen that is finished with fine silica sand on both sides to prevent the roll sticking. Traditionally known as BS 747* felts (now superseded by BS 8747: 2007), this roll is intended for use as a fully bonded preparation or economy intermediate layer within a bituminous built-up roofing system. It is also used on occasion as an underlay beneath bitumen shingles in pitched rood applications.

Impervious to water, insect attach, pest damage, fungi, moss, lichen, mold or bacteria, Icopal Anderson 3B Glass Base Layer is unaffected by freeze / thaw cycling and can support temperatures from -10°C up to +90°C without damage. It is not suitable for contact with hydrocarbons such as paraffin and creosote and is not intended for prolonged exposure to UV.

*Pease note, this product is manufactured to the former British Standard BS 747 Type 3B (now withdrawn).

Surface Preparation

All surfaces to receive 3B Glass Base Layer must be smooth, clean, dry and free from all contaminates that may affect the adhesion and performance of the membrane. Surfaces must be free of sharp projections and mechanical fixings must be well driven to prevent damage to the membrane. Substrates must be primed with an Icopal bitumen primer and left to dry completely prior to the application of the waterproofing.

Application

3B Glass Base Layer is applied to the prepared surface using hot bonding bitumen in accordance with the requirements of the current issue of ‘BS 8217: Reinforced bitumen membranes for roofing - Code of practice’. Side laps should be a minimum of 75 mm and end laps a minimum of 100 mm. Lap joints must be completely sealed and checked for security as work proceeds. Side laps of subsequent layers should be offset by 300 mm to avoid a build-up of overlaps; end laps should also be offset.
