The contents of an extinguisher are known as the fuel, for example; water, foam or Co2.  The different types of fire that the extinguisher is suitable to be used upon, is the “class” of fire.

The 6 different classes of fire are:
Class A fires –combustible materials: flammable solids, wood, or fabric.
Class B fires – Flammable liquids: such as petrol, turpentine or paint.
Class C fires – flammable gases: such as hydrogen, or methane.
Class D fires – combustible metals: chemicals such as potassium, or aluminium.
Electrical fires – electrical equipment: this involved electrical equipment and once the electrical item is removed, the fire changes class.
Class F fires – cooking oils: such as a chip-pan fire.
