Grid Tops & Grates: Preventing Blockages in a Wastewater System

Grid tops and grates provide both function and style to a domestic or commercial property. They prevent debris such as leaves and soil from entering the system, as well as animals such as mice or rats from entering or leaving.

1. What are Grid Tops and Grates?

Grid tops and grates are designed to sit above a drainage opening on the surface to prevent any debris such as dirt, leaves, rodents and more from entering the wastewater system. Without a grid top, there is a large chance that unwanted debris can enter and clog the system, which can result in expensive costs.

It is important to choose the correct unit for the application, factors such as location and footfall should be considered.

2. Types of Grid Tops

There are number of different designs of grid tops, each used in different places to perform a function.

• Grated Grid Tops - grated grid tops feature open slots to allow water to flow through whilst preventing large debris from entering the drainage system, they are most commonly used on roads and pedestrian walkways
• Solid Grid Tops - solid grid tops prevent water entry completely and they are used in areas where drainage is not required, or where access to underground utilities is required
• Hinged Grid Tops - hinged grid tops are designed for easy maintenance and cleaning, and are often used in areas where frequent access to the drain is necessary
• Recessed Grid Tops - Recessed grid tops can be filled with paving material to blend in with surrounding surfaces and are used in driveways, courtyards and landscaped areas

Each material provides its own benefits and weaknesses, whether it be rigidity, durability or cost. It is important to understand the materials that grid tops are available in.

• Cast Iron - Durable and commonly used for heavy traffic areas
• Steel - Lighter than cast iron, often used in urban drainage systems
• Ductile Iron - Stronger than cast iron, resistant to cracking under pressure
• Plastic or Composite - Lightweight, rust-resistant, used in low-traffic areas
